I am the managing director of the communication non-profit organization called Explainables and a science communication fanatic who often asks: Would my grandma understand this? Using the question as a guiding principle for our communication initiatives, I often participate in communication competitions such as FameLab. Outside of competition, I have been involved in a number of lay-friendly science education projects, including TEDX and Science Unplugged, which places Stony Brook Ph.D. candidates in high school classrooms and asks them to explain complex topics in fun and accessible ways. I also engage in helping high school teachers and students enhance their communication skills and have acted as a science communication consultant to the NASA Frontier development Lab and X-prize foundation!
My research involves creating filters for nuclear waste. These filters are smaller than viruses and store dangerous atoms such as uranium and plutonium. We need to use x-rays to monitor those dangerous atoms to ensure that they are being stored safely in the filter material!
